Gordon is based on a mature student who attends a class where I work. He is the
sort of student who tries to answer every question even when he doesn't know the
answer - he wants to be heard. From overheard snippets and my own preconceptions, I
imagine this man is a divorcee, perhaps with children of his own who live with his
ex-wife- I imagine him in his un-lived-in apartment, struggling with the time
between custody visits. Although his life appears tatty and miserable he is
ex-military and his shoes are always clean and his trousers pressed. He represents
a worry of my own - of having children and then becoming estranged from them as so
many fathers nowadays are.
