I was pondering how the concept of God appears in this world. It seemed that often we treat God as if He was a personal employee--- fixing our problems, granting forgiveness or taking our side in a war. In my mind, I raised the question "could a loving God play favorites" and the poem began to come to me.

If He would see good in me but not
you, then not me. If He would hear
heaven in my voice but neither Song
or cry in yours, then not mine. If He
would grace me with His touch but
leave your flesh aching, then caress
me not. If He would be my fortress
but not yours, then no protection. If
a garland of forgiveness He would
offer me but leave you cloaked in
guilt, then no forgiveness. And if He
would grant me Eternal Life but not
extend the same to you then, I pray,
no Celestial Fraternity.
