The Cardinal

Today I saw a cardinal all dressed
In red. It perched
In a Crete Myrtle
With his mate. They reminded me
Of Mary Oliver's poem Red Bird,
Firing up the landscape.
And there were the dun darling
Sparrows in the yard
Of winter maybe just as
Hungry
And many and not quite so
Bold in spirit in the foothills. This
Poem for me
Just happens to be always appropriate
As it is nearing Valentine's Day.
So
I think all birds should be treated
God fearing as we are his children
And they are his creation. So
Winter's Red Bird can fire
Up the landscape like no other can do.
